Cool Cat’s Cool Pick: The Myrtle Beach Pelicans Gear up for another exciting season
By S. Kim Henson
The Myrtle Beach Pelicans gear up for opening night on Friday, April 6 at 5 p.m. The bat swings at 7:05 when the Pelicans take on the Wilmington Blue Rocks for their first of 70 home games.
“We thought it was a fitting way to help start the season, bringing a fan favorite (Thirsty Thursdays) to opening night,” said Pelicans Director of Promotions and Marketing Jen Borowski about calling the evening Frosty Friday and serving domestic drafts from 5 till 7. Not to mention, there will be promotions like fireworks, as well as rolling out the red carpet for the evening’s “Red Carpet Affair.”
In fact, every game is an occasion at the Field of Dreams, built across from Broadway at the Beach after a seven-year absence of pro baseball around the Grand Strand. The Pelicans team debuted in 1999 and they are here to stay because of good baseball, as well as 18 fireworks shows this season, special appearances and giveaways, and daily specials. Featured events for 2012 include the Independence Eve extravaganza, “The Dark Knight Rises” celebration of the final Batman movie, and an appearance by all-American wrestler ‘Hacksaw’ Jim Duggan.
