Elizabethtown Community Hospital is a 25 bed facility designated as a critical access hospital by the Federal government. This designation is given to hospitals that are 35 or more miles from the nearest healthcare facility and has 25 or less inpatient beds. ECH services include a 24 hour ER, inpatient care and laboratory and radiology services. ECH needed to reduce operating costs to remain competitive and offer higher quality services. The project parameters included a reduction in energy consumption improved comfort and a future planned expansion. Another consideration was providing a solution that generated a positive cash flow during the upgrade which the hospital could designate towards the new addition. Using computer modeling and in depth employee interviews Carrier was able to identify areas for substantial improvement and an additional opportunity for savings was through maximizing incentives from the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority along with other agencies that reward companies for the implementation of energy efficient and renewable energy resources in the design, operation and construction of hospitals and institutions.
