Achoooo! Cool Cat here with a shout out to all my allergy-sufferin’ peeps in Myrtle Beach! Pollen season is well underway here in our area and it has been a doozy. Cool Cat likes to keep his friends updated so a quick pop on over to pollen.com and holy tuna and mackerel, are those some high numbers! They use a scale that goes up to 12. From 7.3 to 9.6 is medium-high pollen count and from 9.7 to 12 is high pollen count… hold onto your tails, folks… at the time of this update, we are looking at 10+ pollen counts for at least the next 5 days. What’s making the pollen count so high? It’s the tree pollen, such as pine, birch, box elder, juniper and oak that is making us all so miserable.
Pollen Can Be Worse INSIDE Your House
Cool Cat ain’t yanking your tail on this one, it’s true. How can this be? Let’s break it down…
Trees, in particular, tend to rely on wind to disperse those sticky, sneeze-causing yellow pollen grains, instead of insects such as honey bees. This means lots of pollen flying around in the air outside that can stick to your clothes, shoes, hair and dog and then hitchhike into your house and resettle or circulate inside. Yuck! Opening windows for fresh air or even vacuuming with an inefficient vacuum can add to the pollen floating around in your home.
Pollen is sticky stuff. When it does settle somewhere in your home, along with household dust and pet dander, it can linger long after pollen season is over. It finds a way into the overlooked spots and little crannies and settles in to stick around.
Some varieties of pollen are small enough to remain airborne for a long time, while larger and heavier pollen grains settle and stick. With the pollen that stays afloat, that is just more allergens you’re breathing in every day!
How to Beat Pollen Indoors
You can follow the usual advice of wiping down your dog, leaving your shoes and coat at the door to avoid tracking pollen in, changing clothes and sticking them right in the washer as soon as you get home and then jumping in the shower to wash the pollen out of your hair ASAP. That sounds like a lot of work and you’ll still have pollen trapped inside your house just floating around, waiting to make you sneeze.
